While the parents sleep in another room I will take care of your baby (give bottle, diaper changes, burping and soothing baby between feeding sessions, breast/chest or bottle). I will also provide you a record of baby's night.
I will bring the nursing person either the baby for breast/chestfeeding or the clean pump parts for each pumping session and collect milk for use or proper storage.
A light snack will be prepared for breast/chestfeeding or pumping parent. To answer questions and provide helpful resources I am available during these nights and for correspondence between visits.
If your laundry is in home I will wash and fold baby laundry as well as wash bottles and pump parts. I'll also make sure that baby's play area and changing station are ready for next days activity.

When I was 15 years old my calling to support new moms began. I took care of my nephew as a newborn and shared with him one room, gave him the bottle, changed him, and put him back to sleep. Memories of these nights with little Chris are very dear to me. My professional career started as a customer consultant in a financial institution in Germany where I worked for ten years. During this time I served tourists on a family owned day boat on weekends. Moving to the U.S. had always been my childhood dream and, in 2011 this dream finally came true. As Vice-President, I ran an importing wine business in San Francisco for seven years until 2018. As sole owner, I founded Doula Petra LLC in 2019 to assist families with their newborns.
I grew up in the Mosel valley in Germany as the fourth of five children in a family owned winery. After having my first home birth with a midwife in 2015, I hired a night doula for six weeks and my parents stayed with me for three months. Their help made all the difference for a joyful beginning. Now I live in Walnut Creek with my toddler and preschooler and we like to spend the summers with my family in Germany.
I have undergone a background check with TrustLine, I'm insured and I'm up to date with my CPR, AED and First Aid for infants certifications. So sleep well, your precious newborn is in good hands. Your satisfaction is my goal. It will be my honor to support your family during this exciting phase with a newborn child.

Are you available as a day doula or birth doula?
Although I’m a certified birth doula I’m currently available as a postpartum night doula only. If a client wishes to have a day doula or birth doula I would facilitate a referral. Through my professional associations I have access to a network of highly qualified service providers. However, on the occasions when my clients have an emergency need for a day doula I effort to make myself available for assistance.
What do you like about working at night?
Knowing that the new baby can rely on me and the parents can get some well needed rest is very fulfilling. I love working at night because I can maintain complete focus on the baby without the many distractions of the day.
Since you work during the evening and have two kids of your own how do you manage your sleep?
I go straight to bed after getting home from work and I also take a nice long nap in the afternoon. My partners schedule is flexible since he is self-employed as well.
Is there a booking fee?
No, since I’m working for myself there is no booking fee.
Are you working through an agency and do I pay you directly?
My clients pay me directly and there is no extra fee from a management company. The financial arrangement is completely between my clients and me.
Are you insured?
Yes, I'm insured through CM&F Group Inc.
What are the client’s responsibilities?
My client will sign an agreement that outlines my usual duties and will pay a two nights deposit to reserve my calendar for them. They will offer a bed or comfortable coach for me to rest when I have some downtime. Clients also provide safe parking within reasonable distance of their home. Lastly, they’ll open the door to their house for me on the agreed time and date and trust me with their bundle of joy.
What if the baby comes early?
If your baby arrives before the due date and if I’m available I’ll be glad to start earlier than the initial start date. If I’m committed with another family I’ll ask both families to be a little flexible with their schedule to find a solution that works for all parties involved. If needed I would ask my doula network for an immediate backup doula.
Do you have experience and training with breastfeeding?
Yes, I breastfed my first child for 20 months and my second child 17 months. I’m also a certified lactation educator. It´s been very gratifying to help new parents overcome their breast/chestfeeding challenges.
As a professional, is your preference breastfeeding or bottle feeding for newborns?
There are countless benefits for the health of the breast/chestfeeding parent as well as for the health of the baby in breast/chestfeeding. However, my goal is to support you in your feeding strategy. The parents know what’s best for them and their baby and I’ll support you in your decision.
Do you feed the baby right away when it cries?
Yes, my goal is to avoid crying for the newborns. I’m listening and watching for early cues to avoid crying since a crying newborn is more difficult to feed and is already starving. Please click here for more information on early feeding cues. During the sleep training phase the crying dynamic is more complex.
